Converting between pay periods

Job adverts quote pay in different units — an hourly rate, a monthly figure, an annual salary — which makes offers hard to compare directly. Converting between them needs two extra facts: how many hours you work a week, and how many weeks you're paid for.

annual = hourly × hours/week × weeks/year

monthly = annual / 12  ·  hourly = annual / (hours × weeks)

Why "weeks per year" matters

A salaried job usually pays all 52 weeks including holiday, so 52 is the right figure. Contract or hourly work often pays only for weeks actually worked — take four weeks of unpaid leave and it's 48, which cuts the annual total by nearly 8% at the same hourly rate. That single setting explains most of the apparent gap when comparing a contract rate to a salary.

Worked example

20 an hour for 40 hours a week over 52 weeks is 41 600 a year, or about 3467 a month and 800 a week. Reverse it: a 41 600 salary on the same hours works back to exactly 20 an hour. Drop to 48 paid weeks and the same hourly rate yields 38 400 — the kind of difference worth spotting before accepting an offer.

Gross, not take-home

Every figure here is gross pay, before income tax, national insurance or social security, pension contributions, and any other deductions. Take-home pay depends on your country and circumstances and will be meaningfully lower.

This is gross, before anything is taken out

Every figure here is gross pay. Income tax, national insurance or social security, pension contributions and any other deduction come out of it, and how much depends on your jurisdiction, your allowances and your circumstances — which is why no general calculator can tell you take-home pay. The conversion also assumes a fixed number of hours every week, so it does not model overtime, unpaid leave, or variable rosters.
